Torsional irregularity of Buildings using etabs
chasm9a replied to chasm9a's topic in Seismic Design
@UmarMakhzumi The building is Basement+ground+2 floors. Basement will be used for parking. The south-east corner has a projection at 1st and 2nd floor. Shear wall could be provided only on north side of the building. South side has basement extended upto 40' more. and there are no walls in the basement but a parking. The architect provided the elevation-shaft at wrong location. I discussed that with him but he said that the plan was approved by client and it cannot be changed. Here my question now is: Just like umarMakhzumi said: shear walls have to be provided on all sides of the building, so is it necessary. I have balanced the torsion of the building and clearly it can seen from animation of the building. Is it compulsory that I have to provide shear walls on all sides of the building? (mine thoughts about it is that no!) -
Torsional irregularity of Buildings using etabs
chasm9a replied to chasm9a's topic in Seismic Design
Thank you @Rana @UmarMakhzumi I found what I was looking was for. The building did had a torsional irregularity and (north is upward) north-south wall length was increased by 6' and south-west wall still remained 7'. Calculated drifts as per UBC 97 and brought the drifts within their limits. Thanks to this forums as we have all have been learning a lot from it. Regards -

is there any need of shear wall to the top-left side of this building since the elevator shaft is lying at one side of the building and the building will undergo a torsion. if we need to provide shear wall at some other location, please mention it. please clearify, how can i check the torsion of this building in etabs?

Understanding Shear Reinforcement Results In Etabs
chasm9a replied to Beenay Shahi's topic in Software Issues
The reinforcement is given in Av/s (in2/ft) in my case. I use the formula Ab / (Av/s) x12 = spacing in inches. Ab = area of stirrup bar x no; of legs- 4 replies

I am wondering how others model Stairs Landings in etabs and transfer it to safe. I have provided two landings between each floor. The problem is that they are not exported in the floor to SAFE for designing. Moreover, what about the slab that connects the two landings. It is a shell element in this and is not taken into account for calculations. Safe detailer show it as a wall which is incorrect. And no details are shown for it. Do I have to take each landing as separate storey? What to do about the shell element connecting the two landings on each floor? How are other people modeling stairs in ETABS or safe?

Use AASHTO A3 material for back fill purposes. And 98% compaction is possible for granular materials like A3.

Is this procedure only for slab design or footing design or both. I guess it is for both of them.
