  1. Aoa, Thank you all the seniors for providing such a nice learning platform. I am working on the design of a 3 story structure (2 basements+Ground Floor). Base level is at -10m from grade level while top roof (ground top) is +8m from grade level. Total covered area of building is 100mx60m which is divided into 4 blocks i.e 50mx30m each (See pic attached). Basement retaining wall is provide only at two orthogonal sides (one long and one short side) of each block. But this two sided retaining wall is creating extreme torsion irregularity in my structure. Normal span length is 12m. So my question is that can i ignore this two sided basement wall in my model ? because this is below grade level and would not contribute in resisting EQ.
  2. I am designing a retaining wall (cantilever) for a basement. I have applied only 2 ft additional depth as surcharge load other than the earth pressure load. The height of the wall is 10 ft. My stability checks are satisfying for foundation width of 6.83 ft (2 ft heel, 9'' stem, 4 ft toe), which i think is very high. What can i do to reduce the dimension of my wall footing?
  3. Dear all; May you please provide me with a guidlines to design basement walls.and a solved example. Regards
  4. I need your help in deciding whether to go for a RCC basement or Pillar foundation for home construction. I am not a civil enginer. I want the home to be constructed on a strong foundation. I have heard from someone that basement makes the home weak in terms of its foundation. For example in earthquake home with a basement can be more vulnerable to cracks or collapse. I have zero knowledge about construction. That is why I need your help. Should I go for a RCC basement OR pillars foundation. My only concern is that the home should be on a strong foundation. I am planning for ground floor and in future if needed then first floor. Please guide me which way to go.
  5. I want to design RCC basement walls for a multistory (basement+4 storey) building.Should the wall be designed as vertical slab with soil pressure as dead load??? should i take into account for the gravity loads from the upper story?? thanks
  6. how to design the basement walls fir the vertical loads? is it correct to take 1feet strip and check for stresses against vertical loads and provide the required reinforcement just like the slab is designed?
