  1. Assalamualaikum to all. I analyzed a two story residential concrete building in ETABS 9.7 After designing the structure ETABS shows more Longitudinal Reinforcement in upper story. is it right?? In my concept, bottom story longitudinal reinforcement should be large. I modeled the structure as pin support at base and there is no seismic and wind load applied. Column axial load and longitudinal reinforcement snap shoot are attached below. Help me Please. Thanks in advance.

  4. Assalamualikum, what is the meaning of Longitudinal Reinforcement,Reinforcement percentage in ETABS output. Say, a column reinforcement percentage is 2.3% what is the meaning of it? again, say, longitudinal reinforcement is 4.2 what is the meaning of it? Why do i need to know this parameter?

    ETABS Cracking Reinforcement

    Hello I design flat slab in ETABS and cracks width in the slab larger than maximum allowed by standard. Is it posible to provide larger amount of the reinforcement, which ETABS will use to check the cracks instead of the required reinforcement which ETABS calculated for flexural design?     R/f at top in isolated footing

    Asalamualaikum Why some engineers put reinforcement in top and bottom? They used to put same bars in top and bottom of footing.. What can be the reason?
  7. Can the slab bottom reinforcement pass below inverted beam bottom reinforcement? Otherwise the slab bottom reinforcement mesh will be lifted up atleast 2.5", thus reducing the design effective depth.

    Concrete Exposed to Weather

    Concrete on the building exterior treated to an exterior finish e.g. paint is classified as concrete exposed to weather or not? I am facing this problem in placing the reinforcement, the exterior will be painted and weather protected, should I follow the cover requirements of concrete exposed to weather or not?

    Column Reinforcement

    Dear Members I am working on a project site where Column Reinforcement is as shown in the file. The Columns (C6 to C20) are going from +12'-0" to +48'-0" un-braced and without any slab at intermediate levels. The slab is at +12'0" and +48'0" level. The Reinf is changing and larger dia bars are provided on top. I want to ask that is it alright and what is the possible explanation of changing the number and dia of bars in-between ?     Steel Areas for Flexure Reinforcement Given in ETABS Are Always Less Than Manual Calculation because of A lot of Approximation, So Should we enhance ETABS Steel by some percentage? or put it like tha.

    Salam there is a heavy raft of 6feet depth .Reinforcement is provided at top and bottom.is there any requirement of reinforcement in the middle of this T/B reinforcement for temperature/shrinkage control of this mass concrete.if there is any reference in any code kindly mention Regards

    Minimum Reinfocement Criteria

    The minimum amount and spacing of reinforcement to be used in structural floors, roof slabs, and walls for control of temperature and shrinkage cracking is given in ACI 318 or in ACI 350R. The minimum-reinforcement percentage, which is between 0.18 and 0.20%, does not normally control cracks to within generally acceptable design limits. To control cracks to a more acceptable level, the percentage requirement needs to exceed about 0.60% (REFRENCE ACI COMMITE REPORT 224R-01) So according to above statement , should we follow 0.60%, to be on more safe side??

    in case of torsion at the discontinuous ends of a two way slab it reinforced with torsional steel which is L/5 where L is the longer side,any senior can share the drawing of the reinforcement how that reinforcement is placed ???

    why the minimum steel reinforcement ratio is greater than shrinkage/temperature reinforcement in slabs?ACI reference is,if suppose a lesser reinforcement required what is the reason to provide at least equal to shrinkage reinforcement?

  19. How the main reinforcement in the bottom slab of a water tank is placed ???should it be bent down at the ends just as the one bent up in room slabs?and do the temperature bars be placed below main bars on the soil side or above the main bars on the water side???
