tutorials arranged by seniors are best but these can not be substitute for books, books have the authentic knowledge and one can make a reference to any comment and most of the knowledge seniors have comes from books, sometimes rule of thumbs used by engineers which facilitate the designing process and could be different on the experience and level of the engineer, these rules can't be justified books are required to justify them.these books might be codes !!!

i have a confusion that if the face of gravity wall on stem side or more clear the side which is facing directly the retained material is inclined would the soil pressure be calculated on inclined face same as if the face is vertical ???

i came through an indian book which has a chapter on pile design TREASURE OF RCC DESIGN by Sushil Khanna,check that might be helpful to you :-)

i request to all seniors please share your experience and views that make an engineer a good professional engineer, hope your sharings will contribute to the knowledge which is not in books.

thanx for that much elaborated, explained and magnificent reply :-) but it has contrary wordings once you said that one engineer be capable of performing both the functions design and field then you said that good designer can't be good at field work then you switched things to diploma holder and graduate,i agree an engineer must know what he is doing and why, having engineering degree doesnt make one an engineer rather its professional approach makes a good balanced engineer and good designer knows the difficulties and problems at site.and i say it and i mean it that there is no comparison btw a diploma holder and an engineering graduate rather my question is somehow relevnt.

computing is necessary tool but a good engineer must know how to do it manually and if in case there is no computing facility or there is any problem one must be capable of cheking it manually, using the computing tools blindly is not good!!!how fast or how slow you are in computing depends it is not the fastness it is the accuracy and professionalism which lets you fly high in the profession !!! and a professional person can never be replaced he has his best position always otherwise he himself feels uneasy !!!

@Ayesha, can't an engineer do or be capable of doing both jobs i mean at times he has been designing and at times he is on site ??? @Baz, no brother it is not a wrong question it is a fact, there is comparison btw the two ask anyperson who have experience in field or design @Awais i dont think it is only typical Pakistani behaviour i guess it is the civil engineering community problem

mean beam can be designed at minimum reinforcement ratio,thanx rana sab,what is the flexure resistance factor i know it but want to make its concept clear it confuses me.

@ jammer sir not degrees plus minus it is 90 degrees plus minus frm the location of sunset plz chek some literature about that !!! you are standing on a hill with a surveyor and a total station what wud be the degrees of direction of qibla ther?

hnnnnn but i guess one sheet is not everything in design or engineering if so then maujan he maujan !!! one make a sheet a become engineer designing everything it should be named alladin ka charagh one sheet designed for rcc can not be used in steel n so...if a sheet is universal m confused!!!

for which design you have collected/found this sheet for???

sure it is responsibility of architect but in field engineers supervise the work !!! there are chances when such events come to their jurisdiction :-)
